You know it. I know it. Recruiters know it.
I once had a client play me against another recruiter just to see who was better.
We both found the same candidate but how we approached it couldn’t have been more different.
The other recruiter sent through a watered-down version of the candidate’s résumé; no background checks, no performance verification, no contact details. Just a CV and a price tag.
I sent my client a full report; risk analysis, detailed background, performance history, career trajectory and a personality assessment showing exactly how this person would fit into their team. (A team I knew well, because I’d taken the time to understand their goals, culture and dynamic.)
Then the recruiter then did something that made my eye twitch with anger.
They told my client,
“The candidate wants $140k and if you pay him any less you are devaluing him.”
When I spoke to the candidate directly, he said he wanted $120k.
That recruiter had added $20,000 onto the candidate’s salary purely to inflate their own commission, knowing the client was desperate to fill the role. And the worst part? The client admitted he probably would have paid it out of urgency.
No proper screening.
No ethics.

And that, my friend, is the dirty side of recruitment.
And here’s the kicker: most recruiters quietly celebrate when a candidate moves on because when your people leave, they get to sell that same person to someone else…and then sell you another replacement!
